Kapit To Benefit From RM1.96 Billion Water Supply Improvement Plan

KAPIT, 6 November 2025 — The Sarawak Government has reaffirmed its strong commitment to rural infrastructure development with the approval of RM1.96 billion to upgrade the water supply system in the Kapit Division, a move that is expected to bring major improvements to the living conditions of communities in the interior.

The announcement was made by the Right Honourable Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, during a press conference after chairing the State Development Coordination Committee Meeting (SDCCM) 2/2025 at the Kapit Division State Government Complex.

According to the Premier, the allocation represents a substantial state investment in ensuring access to clean and reliable water supply across the vast and often challenging terrain of Kapit.

“The state government has approved RM1.96 billion to upgrade the water supply system in Kapit Division. In addition, the Federal Government has also allocated RM300 million for the same purpose. However, the majority of the funding comes from the State Government,” he said.

The initiative forms part of Sarawak’s ongoing strategy to ensure equitable access to basic amenities for all its citizens, particularly those in the rural and remote divisions.

He further explained that the comprehensive upgrade plan would focus on improving water treatment facilities, expanding distribution networks to remote longhouses, and upgrading infrastructure to meet rising demand and ensure consistent supply.

Beyond infrastructure, the Premier said that the state’s development agenda for Kapit focuses on improving quality of life, economic participation, and long-term sustainability. Access to clean water is not just a basic necessity but also a foundation for improving health, education, and economic productivity.

The government’s move is part of Sarawak’s broader strategy under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) to uplift rural and interior regions. In recent years, the state has made significant progress in extending electricity, road networks, and digital connectivity to longhouse communities. The new water supply project complements these efforts, further integrating the division into Sarawak’s wider development framework.
